Tamil Nadu: Near-Universal Pregnancy Registration, But Early Registration Still Uneven

Tang to residence-wise data. In rural Tamil Nadu, the registration rate was 98.4%, while in urban areas it was 97.6%. First-trimester registration in rural areas stood at 92.1 percent, while urban areas reported 90 percent. Urban areas had a higher rate of late registration (9.2%) than rural areas (7.4%).

Educational attainment shows a strong association with registration timing. Women with no schooling recorded a high registration rate of 99.4 percent but had the lowest first-trimester registration at 85 percent and the highest late registration at 15 percent. 98.8 percent of women with five to nine years of education reported being registered, with 90.7 percent registering early. Those with 10–11 years of schooling showed 98.7 percent registration and 92 percent first-trimester registration, while women with 12 or more years of schooling reported 97.5 percent registration and 91.3 percent early registration.

In terms of religion, 98 percent of Hindu women registered, with 91.2 percent doing so during the first trimester. Although Muslim women registered at a lower rate overall (96.9%), they registered at the highest rate early (94.5%) and the lowest rate late (5.2%). 98.1% of Christian women registered, with 88.1% registering early and 11.3% registering late.

In Tamil Nadu, 98.8% of registered mothers received the Mother and Child Protection card. MCP card coverage exceeded 98 percent across all social groups, with the lowest coverage among women with no schooling at 96.2 percent and 100 percent coverage among Scheduled Tribe women and women with four or more births. Overall, the data shows that although pregnancy registration coverage in Tamil Nadu is almost universal, older women, high-parity women, and women without formal education continue to experience delays in first-trimester registration, indicating that timing rather than access is the main gap in maternal health service utilisation.
